Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan

Shaping Stratford’s transition into a new metropolitan centre for East London

Stratford is currently undergoing enormous and unprecedented change, triggered by public transport investment and the development of Stratford City and the 2012 Games.

Urban Initiatives prepared the first ever integrated plan for Stratford - the Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan. This is shaping the future of Stratford, building on the huge opportunity presented by the change and investment in the area. With delivery at its heart, the masterplan has triggered major change, including expansion of the town centre to become East London’s primary hub, securing benefits of Stratford City and the Olympic Park for local residents, linking together the various parts of Stratford to improve peoples’ access to opportunities and to create active and stable communities.

The plan will guide the delivery of over 46,000 jobs, over 20,000 new homes, a cultural and leisure hub for East London, new schools, colleges and higher education facilities and a new shopping destination. Gaining buy in from wide range of stakeholders, Urban Initiatives secured unanimous approval for the plan from Newham Council in December 2010.

The Stratford Metropolitan Masterplan is comprised of an overarching spatial strategy for the area and four more detailed masterplans for key areas of focus, a delivery plan to ensure the masterplans are implemented and a suite
of supporting documents (for example community infrastructure and transport studies). The plan was unanimously adopted by Newham Council in December 2010.
