A23 Great Street unveiled to DLUHC and the Design Council

Over the last six months we have been working closely with our client Reigate and Banstead Borough Council to prepare a Design Code for the A23 with the objective to transform this disjointed and highway dominated road corridor into a Great Street that is safe and easy to cross, beautiful to move along and that is punctuated by attractive settlements that are inviting to visit and spend time. The code is one of DLUHC’s pathfinder projects intended to test the use of Design Codes to deliver positive design outcomes.

We presented the emerging Code to DLUHC and the Design Council today and received a positive response.

The Code aligns with the Healthy Streets Design Guide prepared by Surrey County Council but responds to the particular environment along the road corridor to use the existing highway space in the most effective way. A particular aim of the code is to make active travel a more attractive choice and a bi-directional segregated cycle route and significant urban greening is promoted along the length of the route.
