UI Studio has been commissioned by Thurrock Council to develop a vision for the regeneration of the centre of South Ockendon. Developed as a post war overspill estate, the centre and its facilities lack efficiency and are less fit for purpose now. Competition from nearby Lakeside Shopping Centre has led to substantial vacancies in the shopping parade, which further undermines the attractiveness of the centre. The Council is the main landowner and the study will explore the potential to regenerate and revitalise the centre, to rationalise community facilities and to realise council assets. Central to the Council’s aspiration is a new community hub acting as a one-stop shop that will accommodate voluntary, council, health, youth and other community facilities under a single roof in a purpose designed building. The study offers an opportunity to redefine the centre of South Ockendon and provide a new heart for the community.
