Hereford ESG Masterplan

Delivering a new complimentary offer for the city

Overview

The Edgar Street Grid is a 40 hectare site located immediately to the north of Hereford City Centre. When we were commissioned in 2006 the area was under utilised and occupied by the former livestock market, Hereford Town football club and numerous vacant sites.

Our masterplan promoted the creation of new civic, retail and residential quarters ted provide a new city offer and substantially improve connections with the city centre core and to the railway station. The new retail quarter aims to meet demand from national multiples for modern floorplates not currently available within the city centre and promotes a retail-led mixed-use scheme. The residential quarter was conceived as a compact urban village centred around a series of high quality public open spaces, including a new linear park which incorporates a new canal arm and basin.

The masterplan also formed the basis for a design brief to procure a developer partner for the retail quarter. We worked closely with ESG Herefordshire in the developer selection process providing design critique throughout the design and planning process.

Enhancing the city centre offer

Stanhope were selected as the developer partner for the cattle market site and their scheme provides a new mixed-use quarter for the city anchored by a Debenhams department store, and with shops, food and drink uses and a multi-screen cinema.

This development extends, and complements, the historic city centre and provides the larger floorplate retail uses that were missing in the historic centre. The new quarter is laid out as a number of open streets ensuring a high quality pedestrian environment and with the form and style of buildings reflecting the architectural feel of the former cattle market. Enhancements to the inner ring road - Newmarket Street ensure that pedestrian connectivity to the centre is also improved.

The development has been hugely successful and has significantly added to the offer in the city centre.
