Restoring the historic Poplar Baths to its former glory and providing top quality leisure for the local community
Poplar Baths is a prominent Art Deco building on East India Dock Road in Poplar in London’s East End. The building is listed but had been vacant since 1988. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets had an ambition to restore the baths and reopen the facility to provide a top quality leisure facility for local people.
We worked as part of a Bouygues Consortium, to prepare a proposal that both meets and exceeds the Council’s aspiration and that also makes good financial sense. Our proposal not only re-opened the baths but also proposed sixty new homes, strengthened the adjacent Chrisp Street local centre and maintained the historical integrity of the building. We helped Bouygues to co-ordinate their bid and provided planning, heritage and urban design advice to the team. We also prepared the bid documents.
The Bouygues Consortium was short listed as one of two teams to take forward their proposals to the detailed design stage.
